Art Therapy

Arts Therapy is a form of psychotherapy where the emphasis is on making art as a means of expression. This is done within a therapeutic relationship with a qualified Arts Therapist. The Arts Therapist hopes to empower the client to take what they learn from sessions into everyday life for health and wellbeing. Art activities can be tailored for all abilities, ages, needs and interests.

Arts Therapy is so much more than just painting or drawing. We do work with these mediums but we also use:

  • Clay
  • Play
  • Sound
  • Movement
  • Poetry
  • Sculpture
  • Doll making
  • Storytelling
  • Sand tray

The reason Arts Therapy is so successful is that it is often very hard to put into words what is happening in our inner world and to express how we feel. The Arts Therapist is there to work with the client to understand and make meaning of what has been created. However, it is not our job to interpret the artwork.

Some of the other benefits of Arts Therapy are:

  • Relaxation
  • Relief from anxiety
  • Explore creativity
  • Solve problems
  • Gain self esteem
  • Set goals
  • Share in a safe environment
  • Model and practice social skills
  • Emotional growth
  • Sensory integration
  • Improve coordination
  • Make connections
  • Have FUN!
