The half-day workshop outlines the characteristics of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). We explore how to respond to a child’s communication and sensory needs using practical strategies. Community resources will be identified and the roles of the multidisciplinary team supporting a child with Autism will be explored. There are opportunities to ask questions, share experiences and information.

Anticipated outcomes:

  • an understanding of the characteristics of Autism Spectrum Disorder,
  • knowledge of the various communication strategies,
  • discovery of strategies to support sensory needs,
  • insight gained into the roles of the multidisciplinary team supporting individuals with ASD, and
  • identification of relevant community resources.

Participants develop an Action Plan for effectively responding to children with Autism within their own setting – considering interactions, program and environment.

  • an understanding of sensory processing and identification of strategies to support children’s sensory needs,
  • communication strategies developed for the care environment,
  • a range of internal and external triggers for children’s behaviour explored,
  • a plan of ideas and strategies that could be implemented in your service to support children with ASD and their peers, and
  • alternative resources and the location of resources and supports in the community explored.
