Events & Celebrations Calendar

Inclusive Directions Events & Celebrations Calendar
July to October 2010

Festivals and celebrations are a part of family and community life. They enhance and enrich our home lives. Sharing celebrations with children and families is a way of extending children’s home experiences and also introducing children to the diversity that exists in everyday life. Inclusive Directions produce this calendar quarterly.

It would be impossible to celebrate every festival in your program, nor would it be appropriate.

One approach would be to consult with parents about which celebrations are important to them and how they would like these to be included in your program. When linked to the children’s home and wider community experiences, festivals and celebrations can be enjoyable, memorable and help promote a positive attitude to diversity.

If you would like assistance to incorporate celebrations into your program contact Inclusive Directions.

Festival in Focus- Chuseok, Korean Thanksgiving
Chuseok, also known as the Korean Thanksgiving, is held on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month. Chuseok means a great day in the middle of August. It occurs during the harvest season.  Korean families take this time to thank their ancestors for providing them with rice and fruits. The celebration starts on the night before Chuseok and ends on the day after the holiday. Many Korean families take three days off from work to get together with family and friends. The celebration starts with a family get-together at which rice cakes called "Songphyun" are served. These special rice cakes are made of rice, beans, sesame seeds, and chestnuts.  Then the family pays respect to ancestors by visiting their tombs and offering them rice and fruits.   In the evening, children wear their favorite hanbok  (traditional Korean clothing) and dance under the bright moon in a large circle playing games and singing songs. Chuseok is the time to celebrate the family and give thanks for their blessings. (Sourced from www.familyculture.com/holidays/chusok.htm)
